Work starts on Carlisle relief road

Work has started on a new 5-mile £176m by-pass, which will alleviate many of Carlisle's traffic problems. The new Carlisle Northern Development Route runs from junction 44 of the M6 motorway, through the centre of Kingmoor Park, and links with the A595 at Newby West. The road will take a significant amount of passing traffic from Carlisle city centre, and offer better access to west Cumbria from the M6 motorway.

A road and rail interchange at Kingmoor Park is also being developed as part of the scheme. The road is due to be completed by 2012.
