Sainsbury's in bid for new Carlisle store on Caldewgate
Sainsburys supermarkets have now submitted their planning application for a 60,000 sq ft store with petrol filling station in the Caldewgate area of the city. It is anticipated that the new supermarket will create 350 jobs and will be the supermarket’s second store in Cumbria, in addition to their existing store in Cockermouth. The store will occupy a location at the junction of Caldewgate, Bridge Street and Willowholme Road.
The proposed development is directly opposite The Maltings Retail Park on Shaddongate where Peill & Company act for the landlords and where a 3,000 sq ft showroom is available to let, which will overlook the new Sainsburys supermarket.
The proposal will help the regeneration of the Caldewgate area of Carlisle and, coupled with other developments such as the University of Cumbria’s proposal for a new £70 million campus at Caldew Riverside on the opposite side of the road, will see a transformation in the area.
