Both the Lake District National Park, and the Yorkshire Dales National Park have expanded with effect from 1 August (which, coincidentally, is Yorkshire Day). The Lake District now includes Sizergh and Brigsteer and the Yorkshire Dales includes areas around Kirkby Lonsdale in Casterton, Leck and Barbon which had been outside the park. A further area in the northern part of the Westmorland Dales around Mallerstang is now also included.
It means that the two national parks almost touch each other, bisected only by the M6 Motorway running through the Lune Gorge. Whilst planning restrictions will be stricter, hospitality businesses located in the new areas will no doubt benefit from their new status.
