Job prospects in south Cumbria have received a boost from the announcement by the Ministry of Defence that they are ready to sign the contract for two new aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy. The two "super carriers" will be built by a joint venture between BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness and VT Shipbuilders. The ships, to be named HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales will provide 900 new jobs in Barrow and result in the construction of a new £40m shipbuilding hall at the shipyard.
The order is worth £3.9billion, and the two ships are due to enter service in 2014 and 2016 respectively. The order comes on top of existing contracts at the BAE Systems yard, securing the long-term future of the existing workforce, and sustain countless jobs in south Cumbria and the Furness peninsula in support companies.
